North Pole totally ice-free this summer

Polar scientists say that “for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year.” The scientists “believe the chances of a totally ice-free North Pole this summer are greater than 50:50 because the normally thick ice formed over many years at the Pole has been blown away and replaced by huge swathes of thinner ice formed over a single year.”

Rockies Run Ends…

The Official Site of Colorado Rockies: News: Colorado Rockies News

DENVER — Finally, after weeks of reminding each other that they were “not done” as the wins mounted in their 21-1 run to the World Series, the Colorado Rockies could at last change the message.

At last they’re work is done. It didn’t turn out the way the team or its fans had hoped for, but nothing about this unprecedented regular- and postseason surge could have been predicted — not even the fans’ unanimous reaction after watching their team fall four games to none to the Boston Red Sox.

Rockies’ ridiculous run results in pennant

The Official Site of Colorado Rockies: News: Colorado Rockies News

DENVER — The final out, recorded on a three-hop grounder between short and third, appropriately showcased the major reason the Rockies have — for the first time in franchise history — reached the Fall Classic: defense and hustle.

All kinds of numbers will be used to put into perspective the fact that the Rockies are going to their first World Series. For example, Monday night’s 6-4 thriller over the Diamondbacks completed a four-game sweep in the National League Championship Series and was the Rockies’ nearly unfathomable 21st victory in their last 22 games.

But those three bounces that led to the final out and sent 50,213 at Coors Field into hysterics — and had longtime leader Todd Helton still experiencing emotions he didn’t know he had some 90 minutes later — best tell how the Rockies went from tied for last in the NL West in 2006 to waiting to see if the Indians or the Red Sox will be hosting them when the Fall Classic starts on Wednesday, Oct. 24. The first two games of the best-of-seven series will be played in the American League city before the next three are played at Coors Field.

NLCS Most Valuable Player Matt Holliday’s three-run homer capped a fourth inning that saw the Rockies score all of their runs, but D-backs catcher Chris Snyder’s three-run homer off reliever Brian Fuentes in the eighth made it a tense contest. Finally, with two outs and a runner at second in the ninth, Arizona’s Eric Byrnes hit a checked-swing three-hopper to the left side.

Rockies sweep Phils for NLCS trip

The Official Site of Colorado Rockies: News: Colorado Rockies News

DENVER — Once upon a time, long before 50,724 at Coors Field waved their white towels and celebrated an improbable trip to the National League Championship Series, the Rockies lost games like Saturday night’s. Now they almost never lose.

The Rockies used three soft, two-out, eighth-inning hits — the last an RBI single by pinch-hitter Jeff Baker — for a 2-1 victory over the Phillies that completed a three-game sweep of the NL Division Series.

It was the Rockies’ 17th victory in 18 games, the first home playoff triumph in their 15-year history — the only other postseason trip was 1995 — and their first series victory.

It was their first home win when scoring two or fewer runs since July 9, 2005, 1-0 over the Padres.

Rockies Win! Rockies Win!

The Official Site of The Colorado Rockies: News: Colorado Rockies News

DENVER — The Rockies were down two runs and not even out of the top of the 13th inning of Monday night’s National League Wild Card tiebreaker when Todd Helton, the former Tennessee Volunteers football quarterback, huddled his teammates.Helton called the play that would defeat Padres closer extraordinaire Trevor Hoffman in the bottom of the inning and touch off a postgame shower of champagne and beer.

Staying as patient as their leader said to, Kazuo Matsui and Troy Tulowitzki doubled, and Matt Holliday tripled and scored on Jamey Carroll’s sacrifice fly for a 9-8 victory, sending the Rockies to the NL Division Series and touching off bedlam from a sellout crowd of 48,404.
